Troops under Operation Enduring Peace have recovered the bodies of four herders allegedly killed in Kamantan Chiefdom, Plateau State, following a joint search operation involving security personnel and local stakeholders. According to reports, the victims had gone missing after a kidnapping-related incident in Zuturuntinta village, where they were said to have been attacked while attempting to move their cattle to safety.

Joint Security Search Leads to Grim Discovery

The recovery followed a coordinated search mission carried out by troops alongside local hunters, vigilante groups, and Fulani community representatives. Security sources said the search team eventually discovered a shallow grave containing the bodies of the four missing herders. Two mobile phones were also reportedly recovered at the burial site, which may aid ongoing investigations into the killings.

Victims Reburied Under Islamic Rites

Following the recovery, the victims were reburied in accordance with Islamic burial rites, as relatives and community leaders gathered amid heightened tension in the area. The incident has further raised fears of retaliatory violence in parts of Plateau State, where farmer-herder and communal clashes have historically triggered cycles of reprisal attacks.

Military Issues Deadline to Community Leaders

In response to the killings, military authorities have reportedly directed community leaders in the affected area to identify and produce those responsible before Wednesday. The move is seen as part of efforts to ensure accountability and prevent the incident from escalating into broader communal unrest.

Security Reinforced to Prevent Reprisal Attacks

Troops have since strengthened security presence across Kamantan and surrounding communities to forestall any retaliatory action. Residents say the increased deployment is aimed at restoring calm and protecting lives and property as investigations continue.

The recovery of the four herders’ bodies in Kamantan Chiefdom has intensified concerns over security and communal tensions in Plateau State. With military authorities demanding swift accountability and reinforcing troop presence, attention is now focused on whether the perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice before the situation deteriorates further.
